Medium Access Control Techniques for Massive Machine-Type Communications in Cellular IoT Networks

A key component of the Internet things (IoT) ecosystem is wide-area network connectivity, for which cellular technologies are a promising option through their support massive machine-type communications (mMTC). However, numerous devices transmitting sporadically small data packets in highly synchronized way can generate overload on radio access network. This situation leads to shortage resources, especially those associated with random procedure contention, control, and transmission, causing preamble collision, control message blocking, collision. As result, mMTC traffic jeopardize provisioning quality service (QoS) end-devices, decrease efficiency, increase latency device energy consumption. paper proposes medium (MAC) techniques addressing problems related cellularnetworks. First, solution allocating resources QoS differentiation provided, including resource management model, scheduling algorithm, prioritization policy. Second, mechanism reducing collisions also proposed. comprises protocol every scheduled retransmission uses probabilistic policy decide whether retransmit, novel method at estimate number nodes trying access, two different policies employing this estimation. Results show that proposals QoS, latency, consumption, utilization under access.
